Today, the Adelaide 36ers announce that Obi Kyei has requested a release from his contractual obligations and the club has granted the request. Kyei is stepping away from the game to pursue business interests back in his home city Sydney.

The 25-year-old athletic forward joined the club in 2019, where he played 28 games last season, averaging 3.36 points, 4.25 rebounds and 13.2 minutes a game.

Kyei brought international experience to the team playing professionally in Great Britain, Germany and Spain. He also played college basketball for NCAA Division II schools Metro State and Eckerd College.

Discussions took place last week between Obi Kyei’s agent and 36ers GM of Basketball Jeff Van Groningen about Kyei’s desire to diversify his career direction.

“Obi has been a well-regarded member of the 36ers family since his arrival at the club. Following Obi’s request and discussions that followed, we have agreed to release him. Obi has done everything right, kept us informed and explained his position. He leaves with the blessing of ownership, management and the coaches,” Van Groningen said.

Obi Kyei is looking forward to changing direction as he steps away from NBL basketball for this time.

“The long off-season allowed me to spend time pursuing a range of business interests which also includes finding a passion for developing a clothing label. I felt that at this time with so much uncertainty, it would be in my best interest to invest my time in areas outside of basketball in order to make the most of this unique situation. I’m grateful to 36ers ownership and management for their support. I enjoyed the time I’ve had with the club and while I’ll miss being around the group I know this is the right move for my career at this stage,” Kyei said.

Adelaide 36ers would like to thank Kyei for all of his efforts, both on and off the court, the club wishes him all the best with his future.
