Adelaide 36ers captain Mitch McCarron said playing for the Boomers was all about sharing the basketball.

McCarron dished a game-high five assists as Australia accounted for Kazakhstan 98-53 in Melbourne on Sunday to finish their FIBA World Cup qualifying campaign on top of Group F.

“That’s what playing for Australia is all about, sharing the ball, find the best shot you can,” McCarron said.

“When Toddy (Blanchfield) was shooting the ball like that you have to get him the ball.”

Blanchfield scored a game-high 31 points, which included seven three-pointers as the Boomers ran away with the match after a close opening quarter.

“It was close early, we knew they were going to be competitive, they were playing for a chance to play at the World Cup,” McCarron said.

“They played pretty well early on, but we knew if we kept the pressure up they would turn the ball over and it went that way, especially in the second half.

“That’s how FIBA basketball is played, it’s close in the first quarter and the second quarter and hopefully it starts to break open as the game wears on.”

McCarron was thrilled with fellow 36ers teammate Nick Marshall, who made his international debut across the past two matches, and ended Sunday’s game in style with a steal and slam dunk.

“We all knew he was going to try and dunk it,” McCarron said.

“Usually he’s a bit fresher than that, he was a bit tired after guarding full court, but it was great to see him score his first points.”

Now, Australia will wait for confirmation of their lead-up to August’s World Cup and McCarron said there are a number of options.

“We don’t know the exact timetable yet moving forward,” McCarron said.

“There’s potential of teams coming out here or we might have to travel away and where the squad camps are, for now we just all sit and wait.”
