The Adelaide 36ers took their passion for basketball beyond the city this week, visiting Peterborough for a special school holiday clinic aimed at lifting spirits and growing the game in regional South Australia.
Club legend Al Green and development coach Tim Odell ran the session, which drew more than 60 local kids from farming families in the drought-affected region. For many of the young participants, it was a rare opportunity to connect with professional-level coaching—and enjoy the game of basketball.
“Basketball and sport in general is a time when you don’t worry about politics, fires or anything else,” said Green. “You just enjoy life. That’s what today was all about.”
For Odell, the day was a powerful reminder of basketball’s impact. “We’re lucky in the city—we don’t face what these families are going through,” he said. “So to be here, to offer some kind of release or escape, it means a lot.”
The visit coincided with a funding announcement from Premier Peter Malinauskas, who pledged $50,000 to replace the stadium’s ageing backboards. The 36ers fully support initiatives that help strengthen the game at a grassroots level and bring communities together.
“It’s an honour to represent the club in places like Peterborough,” Odell added. “These kids are the future of South Australian basketball, and the joy on their faces today—that’s what it’s all about.”
