The Adelaide 36ers are proud to announce the launch of a pioneering international initiative, further strengthening South Australia’s global reputation as a destination for worldclass education and elite sport.
The Adelaide 36ers Chinese Basketball Academy is an exclusive, industry leading program designed to attract talented student athletes from China, combining high quality Australian education with elite level basketball.
Delivered in partnership with the South Australian Department for Education through Woodville High School, the Academy will welcome its inaugural intake of Year 10 students for a semester long program commencing in Term 1, 2027.
As an Adelaide 36ers High Performance partner school, Woodville High School offers a unique environment where students can pursue academic excellence while accessing elite basketball coaching, leadership development, mentoring opportunities, and immersive match day experiences.
The Academy is open to both male and female participants and is underpinned by a personalised development approach. A strong focus on student wellbeing, cultural integration, and tailored support services will ensure a safe, enriching, and high-quality experience for all participants.
Adelaide 36ers Chief of External Relations & Community Strategy, Ross Wait, said the initiative represents a significant step forward in connecting South Australia with emerging international talent both on and off the court.
“The Adelaide 36ers Chinese Basketball Academy provides a truly unique opportunity for students to enhance their English language skills, achieve academic success, and experience Australian lifestyle and culture - all within a professional basketball environment,” Mr Wait said.
“South Australia is globally recognised as a premier destination to live, study, and work. As an iconic South Australian brand with an international profile, the Adelaide 36ers are proud to contribute to that reputation and extend our reach through this innovative Academy.”

Woodville High School Principal Anna Mirasgentis said the school was proud to partner with the 36ers and the Department for Education on the academy.
“This collaboration not only delivers outstanding academic and sporting opportunities but also connects our school community with diverse cultures and global perspectives,” Ms Mirasgentis said.
“Through this partnership, our basketball academy students benefit from specialist coaching, strength and conditioning programs, access to elite training facilities, and opportunities for skill development, mentoring, and cultural exchange with international peers.
“We are excited to play a key role in connecting South Australia’s public education and sporting excellence on a global stage.
“This partnership will remain firmly anchored in Woodville High School’s mission to empower students to pursue their dreams with agency, purpose and competence by cultivating a future focused learning ecosystem.”
Beyond education and sport, the initiative will support stronger business, tourism and community connections between Australia and China by creating opportunities for engagement between schools, universities, local businesses, industry leaders and Chinese Australian communities.
The Academy will help position South Australia as a destination for international education, sport and cultural exchange while fostering future professional and economic relationships between participating students, families and partner organisations.
Students participating in the Academy will be accommodated through the International Education Services’ internally managed homestay program, providing a welcoming, supportive environment with comprehensive pastoral care to ensure their safety, comfort, and wellbeing throughout their stay.
The inaugural cohort will be capped at 20 students, ensuring a highly personalised experience. Registrations of interest are now open, with strong demand anticipated.
