Bruton: 'Sharing the ball a feature in Phoenix win'

Adelaide 36ers head coach CJ Bruton was one of the happiest people in Mount Gambier after Friday night’s 101-65 NBL24 pre-season success against South East Melbourne Phoenix.

Bruton was especially happy with how his side found the extra pass at the offensive end, the 36ers compiling 17 assists during the victory.

“Very pleasing to know we share the ball, you want to be unselfish and the communication within the group showed throughout that game,” Bruton said.

“I’m excited for our group, we had a lot of young players play their first game in the 36ers uniform

“To be here in Mount Gambier in front of a great crowd, to play in the regional areas definitely is a special moment for everybody.”

Adelaide attacked the basket early and got to the foul line, which put the Phoenix on the back foot and in foul trouble.

“The way we shared the ball and moved, we got downhill and got to the free throw line and had some open looks where we able to shoot from a high clip,” Bruton said.

New import duo Jamaal Franklin and Trey Kell both scored a game-high 14 points in their first game in 36ers colours and Bruton was thrilled with their initial impact.

“Jamaal really set the tone at the offensive end and showed what a weapon he is,” he said.

“Trey is a unique player, how he plays on and off the ball, his IQ will really show throughout the season.”

NBL Next Star Trentyn Flowers had his moments during his professional debut with 12 points, seven rebounds and two highlight slam dunks, while the “rookie” Alex Starling had a sensational 13 points and eight rebounds in his NBL debut.

“The 34-year-old (Starling) really plays with the heart on his sleeve, he clearly set the tone, he’s only going to get better,” Bruton said.

“The 18-year-old (Flowers), I don’t think he had nerves, the way he plays and the way he has been brought up from his high school basketball, now he can showcase his talent on the national stage.”

Adelaide will now focus on this Saturday’s clash against Brisbane Bullets at Lightsview, tip-off is from 2pm.
