Boston Celtics Executive Director of Performance Phil Coles was a special guest at Adelaide 36ers pre-season training this week.

Coles, who is in town visiting friends at the Adelaide Crows, was impressed with the club’s setup going into the NBL23 season.

“Training was great, you have got some great athletes and some really good people involved,” Coles said.

“I had some time back here in Australia visiting family and I want to get over and catch up with Burgo (Darren Burgess, Adelaide Crows High Performance Manager) and see what they are doing out there.

“And while I’m here it was too good a chance to come out here and spend some time with you guys.”

Adelaide 36ers Head of Medical Tristan Chai was thrilled to have Coles visit pre-season training.

“Anytime you have someone of Phil’s calibre in town you want to get as much knowledge as possible to help our program,” Chai said.

“In this space he is one of the best in the world and always so accommodating.”

Coles, who has also spent part of his career at Liverpool, Football Federation Australia and National Rugby League club Newcastle Knights, says there is not too many differences between sporting codes when it comes to getting elite athletes prepared for competition.

“I tend to focus on the similarities. It’s all elite sport, it’s about getting the most out of people,” Coles said.

“It’s about getting the most out of the athletes and making them perform at their best, both physically and mentality.”

Coles was particularly impress with Sunday Dech, who returned to town this week after his NZNBL campaign in the off-season.

“Sunday looks like a great athlete, that is the first time I’ve seen him up close, he was impressive and someone to keep an eye out for the season no doubt,” Coles said.
