Adelaide 36ers captain Mitch McCarron has led the way as the Australian Boomers booked their ticket to next year’s FIBA Men’s World Cup.
The undefeated Boomers confirmed their qualification with a massive 97-50 success against Kazakhstan in Astana on Saturday morning (SA time).
Australia made a blistering start to the contest, with a 27-2 lead in just over six minutes of the opening stanza and never looked back.
McCarron led the charge with nine points, five assists and two steals even if he was the last Australian to score as 10 of the 11 players scored at least six points for the night with the Boomers shooting 51.7 per cent from the field as a team, going 9/22 at 40.9 per cent from downtown and 22/29 at the foul line.
The Boomers will drop a game in this group stage after Basketball Australia decided not to send the side to Iran to play the tenth game of this qualification window.
Australia have played in all but one of the past 13 World Cups and the appearance next year will be their fifth consecutive World Cup run.
The Boomers made it to the semi-finals for the first time in 2019 and will look to build on their bronze medal result at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021.
His 36ers teammates, Kai Sotto and Hyrum Harris will finish their international duties on Monday morning against Saudi Arabia and Jordan respectively.
