Mitch McCarron was today announced the 36ers captain and forms part of a veteran group which includes star forward Daniel Johnson and guard Sunday Dech.
Head Coach CJ Bruton has been impressed with the 29-year-old throughout the pre-season and at a team dinner last night, having taking feedback from the entire squad and his coaching staff, he was delighted to make the announcement.
McCarron’s championship pedigree - coming off last season’s Melbourne United victory, his immediate rapport with his new teammates and his demonstrated long-term commitment to the club having signed for the next three seasons all were factors in his emergence as the leader of the group.
Adelaide 36ers Chairman Grant Kelley welcomed the decision.
"In a short period of time Mitch has established himself as a leader of our Club both on and off the court. We feel this is the right appointment to take our Club to the next level of performance".
Born in Alice Springs, McCarron played US College basketball with the Metro State Roadrunners for three seasons and was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Player of the Year in 2015.
Post college, he played in the Spanish League with Palencia Baloncesto before returning to Australia in 2016 to join the Cairns Taipans. In 2017 he was part of the Boomers team at the FIBA Asia Cup and played an important role in helping secure a gold medal win.
"It's an honnour to get the captain title. We have a group that's really motivated and we can use this leadership group to set standards and get to where want this season", says McCarron.
Head Coach CJ Bruton who is preparing his squad three weeks before the beginning of the season is excited to see McCarron thrive in the leadership role.
