Adelaide 36ers’ two-game NBL pre-season road trip to Tasmania JackJumpers was cancelled on Saturday evening.
The team departed Saturday at 8am on QF674 to Melbourne on a connecting flight to Devonport on QF2055. Upon approaching Devonport airport, the airline made the decision to turn the plane around a go back to Melbourne as it was deemed unsafe to land (after circling the destination for some time).
After arriving back in Melbourne, the club was given the option to stay overnight in the hope a flight on Sunday could land in Devonport, however at that time this flight was not assured.

“It’s really disappointing the weather has stopped this trip from going ahead, the team were looking forward to playing their first two pre-season matches,” Adelaide 36ers GM of Basketball Operations Matt Weston said.
A long-standing club protocol is not to fly and play on the same day due to the risk of injury, meaning that the Ulverstone game was not possible on Sunday evening.
A decision was made to fly home to Adelaide on Saturday evening when it was known the club would miss Sunday’s game, other associated training sessions throughout the road trip as well as an unknown travel schedule.
The club made this decision in the best interests of the players, coaches and staff and the team was back on the training court on Sunday in preparation for the next pre-season game against Brisbane Bullets in Mount Gambier on Wednesday, September 4.
