Australia has suffered heartbreak at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, going down 17-16 in overtime to host nation England in the men's 3x3 basketball gold medal match.
Adelaide 36ers star big man Daniel Johnson put the Aussies infront with the first basket (one-point) of the extra period, but England's Myles Hesson became the hero with a late two-point (three-pointer) shot in the closing stages to steal the gold medal away from the Aussies.
The Aussies dominated the rebound count 26-13, shot at 57 per cent from the field, but had 13 turnovers compared to England's three in the thrilling contest.
It was the second time England had conquered the Aussies in the Birmingham event, after a 17-12 win in the pool rounds.
Johnson finished with seven points and five rebounds on 5/6 shooting, but his late two-point miss in regulation would have handed the Aussies a three-point lead with only moments to go.
The seven-time club MVP shone for the green and gold all tournament as Australia eliminated Kenya 20-15 in the quarter-final, then qualified for the gold medal game against England with another 20-15 win against Scotland in the semi-final.
