The Adelaide 36ers are aware that a man has been arrested in Victoria on charges related to the alleged racial abuse of one of its players via social media.
The arrest was made after Basketball Australia and Victoria Police investigated a direct message sent via social media after a match in November.
The abusive message was referred to Basketball Australia’s Integrity Unit, leading to the arrest this week of a 37-year-old from Huntingdale.
The arrested man has been charged with using a carriage service to menace, harass and/or offend. He has been bailed to appear at Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court on 15 August.
Given the matter is now the subject of criminal proceedings, the 36ers will not comment directly on the incident other than to say the player who received the message is aware of the arrest and is comfortable with the way the matter has been handled.
The Adelaide 36ers commend Victoria Police and Basketball Australia’s Integrity Unit for their strong stance in pursuing this matter.
The club will continue to call out racism and remains committed to ensuring it provides and is part of an inclusive, welcoming and safe environment for players, staff and fans.
