Davis excited after sparkling debut

Adelaide 36ers import point guard Kendric Davis was just thrilled to be back out on the court during his side’s 97-96 pre-season win against Brisbane Bullets in Mount Gambier on Wednesday night.

Davis was outstanding for the 36ers, scoring a game-high 25 points to go with three assists and three steals.

“It went great, it was awesome to get out there with my teammates and play a real game,” Davis said.

“We have been going against each other for weeks now, so it was good to get out there and play another team and see what we look like and see what we need to work on.

“Any chance I get to go out there and play with my teammates and for my coach, I feel good.”

Davis scored 20 points in the opening half as he took over the contest at both ends of the floor.

“I always expect excellence, whether its 20 points, 10 assists, 10 steals, I’ll do whatever it takes to get the win,” Davis said,

“It’s not always going to be 20 points at the half, but the main point is we got the win.”

Adelaide 36ers head coach Mike Wells was impressed with his import point guard’s first outing but knows his side will have to make adjustments moving forward.

“He showed the things that he can do and he is really ball quick which allows him to play across the full court,” Wells said.

“If you want to guard him across 94 feet, that is going to be very difficult to do.

“We have got to find ways to handle the pressure when the opposition try and take him away.

“We also must find different opportunities within our team structure to get him in those positions. He can trigger the whole offense with his quickness.”

For Davis, it was his first match on a FIBA regulation court, which is much smaller than an NBA court.

“You could feel the difference, way less space, it was more physical, the games are way shorter too,” Davis said.

“Coach has been on me that the games are a lot quicker with less possessions.

“I need to make sure we get great shot selection and lead the defensive intensity across the board and getting better as a team.”

Davis will get his next test on Monday afternoon when the 36ers open their NBL Blitz campaign against Tasmania JackJumpers on the Gold Coast.
