Import search all about 'right fit': Weston

Adelaide 36ers GM of Basketball Operations Matt Weston said the club is looking for the right fit with the final two import spots for the NBL25 season.

With nine rostered players already locked away for NBL25, including marquee duo Isaac Humphries and DJ Vasiljevic, Weston said the hunt for the final two import pieces is vitally important.

“I like to do a lot of due diligence, so we are doing it differently (this year),” Weston told media on Friday.

“If we are going to invest this money, lets really know what we are going to get.

“That’s why we bring in this process to say ‘let’s ask the questions to why we go down this road’.”

Weston understands there could be impatience building from these decisions but has implored fans the club is going through the right processes to get the best fits for the roster.

“As we go on and on people can panic a little bit, ‘oh, he’s available, let’s just get him’, we are not going to stand for that,” Weston said.

“We are going to dare to dream and go after the people we want because they are going to fit our key components and bring to our club what we want.

“There is pressure, but there should be pressure, so I take that on board.”

Weston said the club is looking for two key positions in its import search moving into the NBL25 season and beyond.

“We are looking for a playmaking one (point guard), who can get the ball to DJ (Vasiljevic) and Isaac (Humphries) in the right spots,” Weston said.

“Someone who will be able to control the tempo of the game.

“We are also looking at a four (power forward), a stretch four who can also play a bit of five (centre) if we choose to go with small ball.

“We have a shortlist, about three in each (position), but we are in the process of really drilling down and finding out about the person.

“We want to build that culture, so we need the right imports to come in and add value.”

Weston said the club is happy with how the NBL25 schedule has landed and has already begun planning after last Friday’s release.

“I generally break the season up into quarters, so we can take bite sizes out of them,” Weston said.

“That last quarter we have two home games, five on the road and two in Perth, so we will prepare to get ready for that.”

Adelaide begin their NBL25 season at Hoops Fest in Perth against Sydney Kings on September 22 and will be on home court at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre for the first time against South East Melbourne Phoenix on Thursday, October 3.
