'We need to keep moving forward': Bruton

Adelaide 36ers head coach CJ Bruton says the focus quickly turned to the Wildcats after last round’s victory against New Zealand in Auckland.

Bruton has urged his side to continue their recent form, Adelaide is currently on a two-game winning streak, ahead of Saturday night’s showdown against the Wildcats in Perth.

“That (the Breakers victory) was last week now, but what are we giving this week, because right now, no one cares, it’s back to 0-0,” Bruton said this week.

“All I care about is today and what you got for us today.”

Bruton said he can see his side making improvements in all areas and knows this has to continue moving forward.

“That confidence level and that understanding is definitely growing,” Bruton said.

“Taking good shots is helping us out in defensive transition, which is helping out stopping any runs or getting in any foul trouble.

“Letting teams only take one shot is making a big difference.”

After 23 turnovers in the 97-85 win against the Breakers in New Zealand, Bruton says the high turnover count can be seen as a positive.

“Our lapses have been less, but we had a lot of turnovers in that game,” Bruton said.

“To miss out on over 20 chances to score the ball, which would have made that a convincing win.

“But we stayed the course for longer and on the defensive end we kept in the game.”

After winning three of the past four matches, Bruton knows the importance of continuing to make strides at both ends of the floor.

“Knowing the ladder and what everyone is going through, no one wants to lose,” Bruton said.

“When you give you best and you play to the scout and we stuck to the game plan we got the result.

“We have been able to do our plan for longer periods, DJ (Vasiljevic) has added that punch.

“Not just on the offensive end, also his effort on the defensive end has helped lift our players to another level.”

Bruton said the influence Isaac Humphries has had so far in the NBL24 campaign has been enormous, while Jacob Wiley and Jason Cadee has also shown leadership in their play.

“Isaac has been amazing the whole season, he is doing a great job of setting the tone, setting screens and being a big target on the rim and being a big defensive presence,” Bruton said.

“Wiley’s energy, the loose balls, the hustle plays, showing the guys Jason Cadee box outs, and he just gets the ball, that’s a winning play and how that effects the momentum of a game.”
