Wells excited to 'move forward' for NBL25 season

Adelaide 36ers head coach Mike Wells said he’s ready to move the team forward heading into the NBL25 season.

Wells is excited at the challenge ahead in NBL25 and has a focus on where the roster needs to be with just 40 days before the opening regular season game.

“We are the highest level of professional basketball in this country and the Sixers name on the front of the jersey has to mean something,” Wells told media on Tuesday.

“I have been here about 10 days and things changed pretty quickly.

“My job is to move the group forward and how we build that, how we connect to the players, how we connect to the organisation and the fans, that’s all part of being professional.”

After spending almost three decades in the NBA and winning two championships, Wells said it’s important for the team to move forward after the club released Scott Ninnis on Monday.

“I came here as an assistant and to get to know Scott, he has had an amazing career as a player and a coach, he is an amazing Sixer and I have tremendous respect for everything he has done,” Wells said.

“Unfortunately these things happen, all my years in the NBA, I’ve been through it, but for the players, we have to move forward.”

Wells said he is excited for the potential he can see within the 36ers roster, with imports Kendric Davis and Jarell Martin and Paris Olympian Sunday Dech to join the team as soon as next week.

 “My job as a coach, is to help them maximise their potential,” Wells said.

“It’s my job to figure that out and put them in the best position to be successful and then ultimately that will put this team in the best position to be successful.”

Adelaide 36ers fans should expect to see a disciplined team under Wells, who also has had experience with Team USA.

“We are going to be very organized, we are going to be very detailed and we are going to have discipline,” Wells said.

“We want to develop a sustainable system that can grow, we want these guys to be successful, and it’s not always going to be perfect.

“We have had two very good days of practice and we are working through this, these last two days I think we have got better.”
