Championship winning guards Al Green and Scott Ninnis will be inducted into the Adelaide 36ers Hall of Fame at the MVP awards night Friday, 29 April.
They will join existing Hall of Fame members Ken Cole, Mark Davis, Darryl Pearce, Phil Smyth and Brett Maher.
The Hall of Fame recognises the outstanding efforts of past players and coaches throughout the Club’s history. All candidates are considered based on their performance, integratory, sportsmanship and character.
Adelaide 36ers’ Chairman Grant Kelley is honoured to have the two Club legends added to the Hall of Fame.
“Al Green and Scott Ninnis both played in the Club's first ever Championship in 1986 and have contributed enormously to the Club, in multiple ways, both on and off the court, ever since. This is a fitting recognition of their wonderful contribution over the past four decades. We are honoured to induct Al and Scott, two genuine greats of our game, to the Adelaide 36ers Hall of Fame", he said.
Al Green became one of the league’s premier guards the moment he arrived in Adelaide. In 1982 he was crowned the league’s Most Valuable Player along with winning a championship for West Adelaide under head coach, and Adelaide 36ers Hall of Fame legend, Ken Cole. Green’s 1984 71-point scoring record remains as the most points ever scored by one player in an NBL game.
Al Green played a significant part in the 1986 Adelaide 36ers ‘Invincibles’. That year the team averaged 130 points per game and went on to defeat the Brisbane Bullets in the NBL Championship. Green officially retired in 1993 after 340 games, an MVP award and two championships.
Scott Ninnis made his debut with the Adelaide 36ers at 21 years of age. After producing a 40-point game against the West Adelaide Bearcats in 1985, Ken Cole invited Ninnis to the Adelaide 36ers, and it was during his rookie season that he quickly became a part of history joining ‘The Invincibles’ in recording the most successful season in NBL history.
Ninnis went on to play for multiple teams before returning to the Adelaide 36ers in 1993, going on to win the Clubs most improved player award and recording what was statistically his best NBL season.
It was under championship coach Phil Smyth and alongside Club legends Brett Maher and Mark Davis, that the Adelaide 36ers went on to win their second championship with Ninnis claiming his third.
Ninnis retired from playing following the 1998 championship after thirteen seasons and 318 games. Ninnis would go on to win two more NBL championships as assistant coach of the 36ers in 1998–99 and 2001–02.
Al Green and Scott Ninnis will be honoured at the Adelaide 36ers 2022 MVP Gala Dinner on Friday 29 April at the Sky City Ballroom. For any ticket enquires email mary@adelaide36ers.com.
