Humphries leads 36ers’ defensive focus

Adelaide 36ers star centre Isaac Humphries said he embraces his role of leading the team’s effort at the defensive end in a dominant display in Friday night’s win in Sydney.

Humphries was outstanding at both ends of the floor, but it was his ability to rebound, block and change shots at the defensive end which sparked the 36ers’ offense in the 105-96 success at Qudos Bank Arena.

Not only did Humphries score 19 points, the 211cm centre hauled in nine rebounds and blocked four shots in a massive display.

“I go into most games not knowing what offense is coming my way, so I know I can control what I can do defensively,” Humphries said post-game.

“I was really switched on defensively tonight was awesome and I think it really helped the guys.

“My job is to literally be the backline of our defense for all of us, quarterback our defense and I love that role and that job.

“So being the five man, I just love to anchor that and being back there and getting blocks and rebounds.”

Head coach Mike Wells said Humphries was the difference in the contest with his play at the defensive end of the floor.

“That felt like a playoff game out here and you win them by playing defense, and it started with this guy (Humphries), he was absolutely phenomenal,” Wells said.

“It’s communication, with a healthy group I’m able to come off the bench with Jason Cadee, Jarell Martin and Sunday (Dech).

“I got three veterans there that can easily be starters and they solidified us.

“It’s not always going to be perfect, but the group is constantly talking and connecting and tonight there was a lot of great conversations.

“You love the accountability, and we love them doing it.

“When we get stops and we are able to run back at people down the floor that’s when we are at our best.”

But Humphries also played a major factor at the offensive end, connecting on his first four shots as the 36ers used the size advantage inside to open a double-digit lead in the first quarter.

Humphries was connecting with import power forward Montrezl Harrell down low and he said the pair are working out what’s best for the team.

“As soon as Trez came in, I knew I had to be the guy that had to read what he was doing,” Humphries said.

“I love that job, I like to use my brain a lot and read what he is going to do. I’ve sort of figured out what he’s going to do now.

“If he is going to finish, fine, but more often than not he will find me and I’ll do my best to finish for him.

“He has so much experience, so it’s a real honour to play out there with him.”
