Kell making huge point in new role

Trey Kell has been filling the stats sheet recently and he said his great form has all been about respecting and enjoying the game.

Kell had his role changed after Scott Ninnis took over as head coach 10 games ago, the swingman was moved to point guard.

“I told myself to ‘get lost in the game’, and let the game come to you, don’t worry about off-court factors,” Kell said after Adelaide’s 96-89 win against Illawarra Hawks on Saturday night.

“Then me playing the point guard sort of a combination of those things put together has allowed for me to be where I’m at right now.”

Over the past 10 games, Kell is averaging 20.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game and has been given the license to create plays at the offensive end.

The 193cm guard recorded his first career triple double on New Year’s Eve and has hit some clutch shots down the stretch in big wins against Brisbane Bullets and Melbourne United.

Kell said despite putting up huge numbers, his focus is on the team and taking each challenge as it comes.

“We are taking it game-by-game, we know we have a steep hill to climb,” Kell said.

“It’s not over, day-by-day just get better, game-by-game, get another win on the scoreboard and see what happens.”

Kell said his side will look to work on limiting the opposition’s field goal attempts after the Hawks had 19 more shots than Adelaide on Saturday night.

“It’s a credit to us, we made them take some tougher shots and held them to a low field goal percentage,” Kell said.

“We have to clean up the offensive rebounding, but you take it when it’s a win.

“But it’s obviously something we have to fix for next game.”

Adelaide will be back on home court this Saturday night when the 36ers host Cairns Taipans at the Entertainment Centre from 5pm.
