Dech, Smith-Milner face must win games

Adelaide 36ers guard Sunday Dech and newly-signed big man Tohi Smith-Milner have fallen short in their countries FIBA World Cup opening matches.

South Sudan has fallen agonizingly short of a win in its first ever FIBA World Cup game, while New Zealand fought admirably against a heavily-faniced America side.

FIBA World Cup debutant South Sudan has come agonizingly close to a victory in its first ever game at the tournament, but fell to Puerto Rico 101-96 in overtime on Saturday.

New Zealand fought strongly against the United States in its opening game of the tournament, however the power of the gold medal-fancies proved too strong in a 99-72 success.

The Bright Stars headed into half-time with a 10-point lead, but they were pegged back in the second half by Puerto Rico.

Ismael Romero had the chance to win the game for Puerto Rico with a pair of free throws after the final buzzer in the fourth quarter but missed both to send the game to overtime.

Reigning NBA G-League MVP Carlik Jones starred for South Sudan with 35 points, 11 assists and four steals, while Wenyen Gabriel ended the game with three blocks.

Dech and former 36ers forward Majok Deng both played solid roles in the incredible game, and both hit the court for over 19 minutes of action.

The 193cm swingman ended the game with six points and a pair of rebounds, while Deng finished with seven points and four rebounds before fouling out.

Following their pre-game haka the Tall Blacks shot out to an improbably 10-point lead in the first quarter before they were meticulously pegged back.
