Adelaide 36ers captain Mitch McCarron says the key to a great pre-season is to not have an off-season.
McCarron has spent the winter months winning gold as Boomers captain at the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup in Jakarta, as well as teaming up with 36ers recruit Anthony Drmic at NBL1 North club Northside Wizards.
“I kind of prefer it that way (no off-season). You got to get some down time and some rest somewhere, but I prefer to stay in game shape whenever I can, and this year has definitely been that,” McCarron said on day one of pre-season training at GameReady Performance in Thebarton.

“It’s awesome to be back in town and it’s going to be an exciting group.’
The 189cm guard says the new-look NBL23 roster looks tough, headlined by the with boom recruit signings of Robert Franks and Antonius Cleveland.
“Picking up Franks and Cleveland is huge for us, I’m excited for some of the young guys to come back and to play with Anthony Drmic again, who I’ve been playing with in the off-season,” McCarron said.
“Everyone is going to be able to shine individually.”
McCarron is thrilled to be linking up with Kai Sotto again this season after the 218cm centre confirmed his return last week.
“It’s awesome to have Kai back, I’m sure he’s got a ton of motivation and it’s going to be a big year for him,” McCarron said.
“He made some big strides last year and he will build on that again.”
The 36ers captain said there will be a big change in game style for the NBL23 campaign, which will focus a lot on defence.
“We are going to get up the floor and play some defence, which really let us down last year and we got to turn that around this season,” he said.
The final two pieces to the roster remain a mystery, but McCarron has full faith the right players will be joining the group.
“We are looking at a five man (centre) and another guard spot, I don’t know who that is just yet but I’m sure CJ (Bruton) knows what he is doing,” McCarron said.
