Wells has praise for Davis after big display

Adelaide 36ers head coach Mike Wells was impressed how his point guard Kendric Davis responded in Sunday’s 113-93 loss to Melbourne United at John Cain Arena.

Davis had a game-high 30 points and 11 assists as he almost singlehandedly got Adelaide back into the contest in an emotional last quarter.

After scoring the first four points of the game, United went on a 13-0 run and held a double-figure lead for most of the contest, before a late charge led by Davis.

His three-pointer with just over six minutes remaining reduced the United lead to 90-85, but that is as close as Adelaide got.

“He’s an outstanding player, he is very talented young man. His future is just so bright,” Wells said post-match.

“His growth as a person over these past three or four months have been exceptional, and he is only going to keep getting better every day.

“His days are going to be really bright in this league or wherever he plays, and we hope he is a 36ers for a long time.”

Wells was proud of his side’s effort despite playing catch up for most of the afternoon.

“We stayed in it, we competed, we made a couple of runs at it in the second half,” Wells said.

“We kept making adjustments trying to get to their three-point shooters, but they shot the ball well today, I tip my hat to them.

“We will look forward to them coming to Adelaide.”

United connected on 20 three-pointers and always came up with a big shot or two whenever Adelaide started to get some momentum back in the game.

“I don’t take any negatives away at all from this loss today, absolutely none,” Wells said.

“I’m excited heading into the break, I’m excited for the games after the break. I’m excited to see how good this team can be.

“We got a really good group that is committed, we can do a lot of different things, I’m excited to go out and get after it.”

Wells has said his side will work on growing every day over the break and knows defence is going to be the top priotiy.

“It’s going to start on the defensive end, the first thing is always going to be your challenge of ho you guard the ball,” Wells said.

“What your rotations look like, what your communication is behind it.

“It’s all about our connection and our communication within the system and everybody speaking the same language, on the same page, with the same goal.”

Adelaide will be back in action on Saturday, November 30, when the 36ers host Tasmania JackJumpers at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre from 7pm ACDT.
