Adelaide 36ers to head to Melbourne for NBL Cup

The Adelaide 36ers will head to Melbourne for the inaugural NBL Cup later this month playing eight games in just 21 days from Sunday, 21 February.

In what will be one of the biggest basketball events ever staged in Australia, the NBL Cup, to be staged over four weeks, will feature all nine NBL teams in 18 double headers at John Cain Arena and the State Basketball Centre in Melbourne.

Adelaide 36ers Chairman Grant Kelley, who is also part of the NBL’s Return to Competition Taskforce alongside NBL owner Larry Kestelman and Melbourne United part owner Craig Hutchinson, is looking forward to this truly unique event. "The NBL Cup will showcase one of the best basketball leagues in the world in a great event for Melbourne and Australian Sport," Kelley said.

General Manager of Basketball Jeff Van Groningen explains, “For the coaches and players across the league it’s a unique chance to play a high volume of games in a short period of time, in an innovative format, which will demonstrate the talent our league has within it”.

All nine NBL teams will feature in 36 games with $300,000 prize money up for grabs and all wins and losses also count towards the 2020-21 Hungry Jack’s NBL season.

Every team will play each other once and the team with the most points at the end of the 36 games will be awarded the NBL Cup and $150,000 in prize money. The runner-up will receive $100,000 and third place $50,000.

At the completion of the NBL Cup the Adelaide 36ers will return to Adelaide and complete the remainder of their home and away season.

Ticket prices will start at just $17 and will go on sale to Adelaide 36ers Club Members Monday, 8 February and the general public from Tuesday, 9 February.

Hungry Jack’s NBL Cup games will be broadcast live on SBS, ESPN and SKY Sports (NZ).
