Adelaide 36ers head coach CJ Bruton says the league’s new play-in tournament is a big win for basketball fans.
The Hungry Jack’s NBL Finals series will include the new play-in format, with the top six teams now getting a shot at championship glory.
“It’s always exciting to have a better chance to win a championship and it will be exciting for the teams that make it,” Bruton said.
“Anything that adds excitement to the game and league I’m up for.”
The top two teams after the regular season will automatically qualify for the semi-finals and teams ranked third to sixth will compete in the play-in to make the final four.

Hungry Jack’s NBL Commissioner, Jeremy Loeliger, says the new system will add excitement and intrigue for fans.
“The end of the season will have a new level of importance and intensity, not to mention three new postseason blockbusters,” Loeliger said.
“Most importantly, more teams will remain in the championship hunt for longer, meaning more fans will continue to be engaged during what will be a more exhilarating finish to the season.
“The magnitude of these play-in games will be enormous with the fate of some clubs to be determined by do-or-die contests that promise to deliver a thrilling atmosphere.
“The NBA has had great success with its play-in tournament. We studied that model and are confident ours will see similar success.”

Bruton said Adelaide’s goal for NBL23 remains at making the top four.
“For the teams that are right there on the bubble, this will create a lot more games at the back end with a lot more on the line,” Bruton said.
“The goal is still the top four as you’re the teams you finish third and fourth get that double chance to make the playoffs.”
